Johns 4th at International Bass Competition

Elisabeth Morrow eighth-grader, Daryl Johns, placed 4th with honorable mention at the Thelonious Monk International Jazz Bass Competition. The next oldest contestant was in college! Here's the report from his mom, Debbie Keefe:

Daryl Johns performed at the Smithsonian Institute in Washington DC this weekend for The Thelonious Monk Jazz Bass Competition. He played a set of 3 tunes: Humpty Dumpty by Chick Corea, Monks Dream by Thelonious Monk and Caravan by Juan Tizol with Geoff Keezer on Piano and Carl Allen on Drums. Out of 15 Semi-Finalists, he came in 4th place with honorable mention! Daryl met, hung out and played for some of the great icons of jazz including: T.S. Monk, Ron Carter, Herbie Hancock, Wayne Shorter, Bobby McFerrin, McCoy Tyner, Charlie Haden, John Pattitucci, Christian McBride, Bob Hurst and Dave Holland...to name a few! What a weekend!
