Seventh Grade visit to NYC's Chinatown

As part of our study on the history and culture of East Asia, the seventh grade visited New York’s Chinatown, one of Manhattan’s oldest neighborhoods. During our two-hour guided tour we explored the historic landmarks and hidden side streets of this area, which is home to the largest concentration of Chinese people in the Western Hemisphere. ~ Michele Bower, History Chair

Rainwater Collection

Recently, The Conservation Club made two rainwater collection systems at the science shed and the garden shed. Runoff will be collected in drums and used in the vegetable garden. Gutters and downpipes will be installed shortly. In addition, the students relabeled the composting bins with signs to show where the green material (freshly cut grass, herbs and shrubs), brown material (dead leaves and twigs) should go. Good work Conservation Club! -Mr. Lyon

Our Wildlife Friendly Gardens

Recently I fielded some questions about the state of our gardens. At Elisabeth Morrow we try to keep our gardens “wild,” as “cleaning up” may affect the balance of plant and animal species the following season. Leaves are left on the ground to provide mulch: this protects the soil against erosion, helps retains moisture, provides nutrients (for the soil) and insulates the ground and seeds from extreme weather conditions. As well, we try to encourage local fauna (such as birds, insects, small mammals, reptiles and amphibians) to visit or live in our garden over the winter. We do this by preserving a suitable habitat: even in the fall, our indigenous plants provide food, shelter, and materials for building nests.

A Very Successful Open House!!!!

After a soaking rain on Saturday, the sun finally emerged for the several prospective parents who attended our annual Open House yesterday at 1:30.  I would like to extend my thanks and appreciation to the faculty, staff, administrators, student ambassadors and musicians who made the event so successful.  I also extend a warm thank you to the many families who toured our campus yesterday.  We hope that you enjoyed your visit.  This blog is updated almost daily with campus events, so we encourage you to check back frequently to learn more about our wonderful School.

Sincerely,

Blair Talcott Orloff

Eighth Graders at United Nations

At this moment, our Elisabeth Morrow eighth graders are touring the United Nations. (Photo: Dr. Lowry)
At no other time in its history has the United Nations been called upon to play so many vital roles or engage in global progress towards democratic government, sustainable development, the observance of human rights and the peaceful settlement of disputes. Its frequency in the news for its multidimensional work has fostered many class discussions about complex issues such as globalization and multilateral diplomacy. It is important that these young student understand that their daily lives are lived in a global context.

Water Conservation Project

From the Conservation Club:

"Today, our group had a blast! We first leveled out an area. Then we put two platforms on it. After that we put a collection bin on top to collect rain to irrigate the garden. Other groups cleared out the back of the shed. And others put shelves on the back of the shed. All of us loved it!"

A Chilton House Tradition

The Annual Cocoa Party for students in the Early Childhood Division:
“The students come each day, 4 or 5 at a time, and enjoy cocoa, marshmallows, and cookies, while I read a story to them. On Friday, I invite the entire class to the library to see a video of the story and give them a souvenir booklet of the event, complete with their picture in it, along with a poster for the classroom. I'm told this tradition started when EMS was in the original building on Linden St. and the children came in from playing in the snow and the teachers decided to give the children hot chocolate and read to them. All the CH students will be invited to a cocoa party this school year.”
