Once Upon a Mattress is loosely adapted from Hans Christian Andersen’s classic fairy tale, “The Princess and the Pea.” It was originally written as a one act musical at Camp Tamiment in Pennsylvania’s Pocono Mountains and later expanded into a Broadway production, opening in 1959. SInce then, Once Upon a Mattress has been presented throughout the world in dozens of languages and remains one of the most produced musicals at school, community and professional theater companies.
