Berries, Nuts, Pods and Capsules...

Here’s a picture of just some of the variety of berries, nuts, pods and capsules that can be found in our gardens. These provide food for the birds, animals and insects within our ecosystem. In this picture: climbing bittersweet (yellow and red), prairie crabapple fruits (large red fruits), mile-a-minute creeper berries (purple), horse nettle (from the potato family, yellow berries), red oak (acorns), hyacinth bean (red bean pod), shagbark hickory nut, hibiscus capsules, sweetgum ball and burrs. Wow! ~Gary Lyon, Director of Environmental Education
