Latin Class

In 8th grade Latin II, students are currently exploring the six different tenses of Latin verbs by completing synopsis charts and performing in synopsis races. Due to the complexities of the Latin verb system in comparison to the English verb system, the students must be diligent to watch their verb endings carefully in order to fully grasp each tense. 

This semester alone, we will cover:

•  all verb conjugations in every tense and mood

•  3 noun declensions

•  all pronouns and adjective forms

•  translate passages from Vergil's Aeneid and Ovid's Metamorphosis.

Over 800 Apples!

"As part of their apple study, the first graders took a field trip to Dr. Davies Apple Farm in Congers, NY.  Altogether, they picked over 800 apples!  After using the apples for various math activities, the first graders will take apples home to bake treats for an apple bake sale.  All the proceeds from the sale will go to the Special Olympics." ~Mrs. Galas

A Trip on the Clearwater

During Adventure Trip Week in September, the 5^th grade took a trip on the Hudson River Sloop Clearwater, as part of their study of the Hudson.  They tested the water, learned about pollution and how it has lessened over the years, and they helped sail the ship.  Charts were read, sails raised, rope pulled and water examined!  Here, a few photos of the adventure.

The National Anthem

Handwriting Without Tears in Action!

The Handwriting Without Tears program provides easy language and multi-sensory activities to reinforce letter formation in a fun and exciting way for children.

The kindergarten children are having fun getting ready for handwriting! As an introduction to handwriting, they explored and played with the handwriting materials—big line, little line, big curve and little curve.

Following the rhythm of the music, the children used two big lines to keep the beat.

Tap, tap, tap the beat with big lines.

Using the wooden sticks and music the children were excited to create and build their own mascot, Mr. Mat Man.

2011 EMS BOOK FAIR

The EMS Book Fair is an annual tradition sponsored by the Parents Association in early November. It is one of the largest book fairs in the tri-state area and is held in the Gymkhana, where thousands of books will be on display for everyone to browse through and purchase. The Book Fair features distinguished author visits, a wine reception and a kindergarten flashlight picnic, amongst other things. Our goal is to help instill a love of reading and books in the children, while having lots of fun.

Look at the Walls to See What is Happening

It is so informative to take a walk through the halls of EMS and take the time to really look at what has been put on the walls. In a few minutes, you come to understand some of the activities and projects that have produced such interesting displays. Here's just one example:

The Brook Playground Takes Shape

The new equipment is rising from the ground.

Destruction has Begun

Workmen began the process of removing the Brook Playground today.  It stopped raining long enough to begin dismantling the old structure, which will take a few more days to complete.  The third grade classrooms that overlook the area enjoyed watching the progress.  If the weather turns nice, as promised, it will be only another two weeks until the children are enjoying a brand new space for fun and recreation.  Have we had enough rain?
